Winter 1893

A Period of Change~

Earlier once I awoke—being here, my thoughts reminisced about the past. Much within our world has changed since Margarita’s death. Unable to disclose the one accountable has nearly driven Tristen mad. Fearing his inner beast, the vampire remains buried deep within the earth. Yet night after night, his cries haunt the skies. Drawing in a breath, I poured myself a glass of substance. Moreover, wondering why, I chose to visit Monroe Castle?

Cursing fate, I swallowed the crimson liquid, smashing the crystal goblet between my talon fingers. Sensing a sudden change in the air, I glanced outside. As the winter storm intensified, I willed the castle door to open and walked into its treachery. The frozen pellets began cutting into my flesh. Blocking the pain from my thoughts, I continued toward the family crypt. Moments later, I entered my parents’ burial chamber. Seeing their names etched in the marble stone, as always crushed my heart. Reaching into my pocket, I pulled out the silver crucifix. Its yellowish stones reminded me of the light that no longer shined in Tristen’s eyes. Suddenly, I found myself telling the deceased Mr. and Mrs. Monroe the entire horrid tale.

Hours later, I bid them good evening. Gazing, one last time at the crucifix now placed near my mother’s treasured pieces before I sealed the crypt. For I know within my soul, centuries will pass before, I return. The ache of losing them—the suffering Tristen is fated to endure has intensified long forgotten emotions.

Once the sun sets on the morrow, I will cross into another realm—a place where evil rests. To save Tristen’s soul, I must do this. And reveal the merciless vampire, the one truly responsible for Margarita’s death.

An encounter with evil~

Tonight as I awoke, once again, my body throbbed within, sensing Tristen’s did as well. Silently, I cursed fate. Two nights passed, buried deep beneath the earth, yet neither he, nor I was of full strength. As I drew air into my lungs, Tristen’s anger pierced my thoughts. Once, he sensed the vampires’ protecting Maggie’s slayer no longer within this realm.

Fearing the vampire would act foolishly, I mentally reached out to him. “Tristen, though we did not uncover the evil one’s identity, we did learn of others involved. Once you and I have fully recovered, we will seek them out. They cannot stay hidden forever as they must feed.”

“As must we, Lucian… so I suggest you become one with the night and join me. I already feel my body regaining its strength from those I’ve feasted on.”

Sensing the vampire’s ruthlessness as he drank, I swore. “Tristen, you are behaving like a fledgling. You know as I, nearly draining ones life force is forbidden!”

“Do not dictate what is and is not acceptable behavior within our world, Lucian! For the evil ones changed the rules the night, they murdered my wife! And I will use whatever means necessary to destroy them!”

Taking to the skies, I screamed into his mind. “So is this how you plan on honoring Maggie’s memory for all eternity? By becoming the very creature we hunt!”

As I took on human form next to Tristen, the scent of fresh blood overwhelmed my nostrils. A sense of unease stinging my nerve endings as I eyed the bodies scattered about. “By the gods above, Tristen—can you even grasp what you have done?” the vampire’s crimson eyes stared back at me.

His hunger satisfied, Tristen tossed his last victim to the ground. “Murderers, thieves and rapist are the mortals I’ve hunted for centuries! Be thankful, I chose to drain them and not an innocent.” Without a care, the vampire set the human bodies aflame.

Stunned by Tristen’s behavior, I lunged at him. For the vampire’s sudden disregard for humanity sickened me. Calling forth my supremacy, I grasped him within my hold, ‘as I too had fed prior to joining him’.  Not expecting the attack momentarily enabled him powerless. Mentally, I reached out to the human within. ”You cannot continue down this path, my brother. The choicesyou are making go against everything you believe in. Betray the woman you loved as no other. Honor your wife’s memory. Bring her killer to justice… but not like this Tristen… Not like this…”

Suddenly, I sensed the rage within Tristen turning into unbearable pain. As his bloodstained tearing eyes looked at me, “I cannot do this Lucian… each night, I awake Maggie’s loss takes another piece of my soul. My anger is all that’s left of me… Honoring my vow, all are brought to justice for taking her life.”

Cursing fate, I sighed, “Tristen, I cannot begin to fathom the loss you are feeling. However, the path you are traveling will destroy you. You know as I, the evil ones will stay hidden until the next full moon. They did not walk away from our battle unscathed either. Go to ground Tristen, shut down your body and give it time to heal. Allow your mind to do the same. Please, do it for Maggie… in honor of what the two of you shared, believed in.”

Knowing, I spoke the truth, Tristen nodded in agreement. Once all remnants of his being on the waterfront removed, the vampire lunged toward the skies. Sensing his destination, I cursed the evil undead. For my old friend, once again would seek his rest in the crypt sheltering Margarita’s burnt ashes.

The Beast Within~

Tonight as the moon magnified the stormy sky, once again Tristen’s rage pierced my thoughts. As, his emotionless eyes will forever haunt my soul. Once, I revealed there was more to Maggie’s death; the beast within my friend is all that remains. The vampire’s sole mission—discover the one being who orchestrated his wife’s demise.

I cannot help but wonder. This being, did he at anytime fathom, the consequences if his plan failed? Did he realize the vampire he longed to control possesses the power to destroy him? For Tristen’s only emotions existing within are those inflamed from hatred.

I think back to the evening, I arrived in Italy. As I approached the mausoleum, Tristen’s agonizing sense of loss echoed in the wind. Making my presence known, I took on human form, materializing within the marble crypt.

My long-time friend’s spoken words that of a broken man, “I envy you, Lucian. Loving another will only cause your heart to weep for all eternity.”

At that very moment, I knew the secret I was about to reveal would change everything. For Tristen’s sole desire would be that of revenge. Once, I told him what Kara had discovered the beast within lost all control. For the vampire, I call a friend—no longer existed. As he shrieked, his crimson emotionless eyes stared back at me. Cursing fate, I sensed, Tristen would honor his wife’s dying words… only to seek out the evil being. No longer caring, he pledged to Margarita to protect mankind.

January 1892

Sweet Revenge~

Tonight once I awoke, I sensed their presence. Quickly, I dressed and willed myself to the main floor of my southern home. As Kara stood in the entrance way, Grayson on her arm, I invited them in. Her crimson eyes stared back at me, the rage within her piercing my thoughts.

Drawing in a breath, I asked what I feared I already knew to be the cause. “You have discovered where Tristen’s creator seeks his rest, am I not correct?”

Taking a seat in my overstuffed chair, she replied. “These past weeks, what Grayson and I discovered is quite alarming. Though Tristen’s creator orchestrated the events which lead to Margarita’s death, it is much more.”

Needing fully to understand, Kara’s statement, I nodded, and she continued, I wanted to know all. “It seems, Margarita’s death was a plot to disrupt our universe. Tristen’s creator carried out this order given by another. For centuries, the evil ones have yearned to possess supreme powers. They believe once destroying the being we love—hatred will rule our souls. You know as I, a vampire’s ruthlessness is undisciplined without human emotions. Margarita’s absence has nearly destroyed all of Tristen’s humanity. If he chose to become one with his creator, evil as never before would be unleashed.”

My inner-self burned with rage from Kara’s words, cursing fate, I shouted. “Have you located his creator’s resting place? Do you know the other undead involved? Here my words, Kara, I shall honor my vow to Margarita… Tristen will not lose his soul to such a traitor!”

Sensing my anger building, Kara touched my mind—easing the beast within. In a level tone, she divulged all. “Tristen’s creator no longer walks this earth, for Grayson, and I destroyed him. I assure you, the agony, he suffered, was merciless. However, he was loyal to his quest. The undead, he refused to betray—regardless, how many times, I cut into his mangled carcass. The horror of his existence ending, robbing him of air, as his blood nourished the rodents.”

As a sense of triumph filled my thoughts, I asked. “Is Tristen aware his creator has been destroyed? Does he know the truth why, his wife no longer lives?

Kara glanced at her husband Grayson, wrapping, her hand in his. Silently, I swore, sensing my creator blocking their mental conversation. Leaning closer to the newly turned vampire, she sighed. “Tristen knows of his creator’s destruction… yet he is unaware others also prearranged Margarita’s death. Lucian, you must be the one to tell him. I fear this news will all but destroy him. Only you possess the strength to reason with him. As to, why, he must honor his wife’s dying words.  Grayson and I must return to Europe. We only just discovered, Gregory’s young bride Alexandria was also attacked two nights after Margarita’s death. On the morrow, once darkness covers the earth, the ancient vampire agreed to a meeting. I pray to the fates, this rendezvous will reveal the knowledge, we seek to end this.”

I looked at my creator, cursing what she asked of me—regardless, I vowed to honor her request. After Kara informed me of Tristen’s location, she and Grayson bid me goodnight. Drawing in a piercing breath, I glanced at the moon-lit sky. Once the sun set on the morrow, I would travel to Italy. Fearing deep within, once again, my old friend would seek my destruction for the news I shall bear.
