Fall 1890~

A Sense of Untruth~

For six full moons, I have spent my waking moments alone—until tonight. For the invitation to Kara’s masquerade ball held no interest. However, my creator was quite persistent—invading my every thought until I agreed to attend.  So as darkness covered the earth, I dressed for the occasion and honored her request. I arrived at mid-night and entered the manor. Kara greeted me with a warm smile and a human by her side. The moment she introduced the handsome creature—I sensed a change in the air.  Her happiness flooding my thoughts—for Grayson Moore had stolen her heart. I wondered if he knew Kara’s secret—that she was a vampire. As were many of her guests this evening.  I pierced his mind and my question was answered. Grayson knew all too well Kara’s secret—wanting nothing more than to become one of the un-dead. The human’s desire concerned me. With-in I sensed his wanting to be turned went deeper than his love for my vampire friend. I decided to broach the subject—once I could get Kara alone.

Much later while enjoying the fresh evening air Kara joined me on the balcony. I leaned over and kissed her cheek—my creator was a beautiful creature. Then I asked, “Are you in love with the human?”

“Is it that noticeable? I’ve never been one to reveal my feelings,” she responded.

“The moment I arrived, I sensed your happiness—your love for this man.” I confessed.

I sensed my observation pained the vampire—which was not my intent. “Kara, we have been friends for centuries. Your welfare is my only concern—for I sense Grayson’s desire. The human is longing to become one of us—undead. The question I ask—this yearning for mortality he wishes. Please insure it is because he loves you—and nothing more.”

“I am not a fool, Lucian,” in a hushed voice the vampire responded.

Not thinking I pulled her into my embrace—for Kara would always possess a piece of my soul—my heart.

“I only say these words out of concern, Kara. You are a dear friend, and I’m worried. In nearly 300yrs, I’ve never known you to be this trusting.”

Her golden eyes blinked away fresh tears. “Lucian—you will always hold a special place in my heart. The night I turned you into one of us—a part of me wished for so much more. Nonetheless—deep with-in, I sensed it would never come to be. For the one, you will love as no-other is not I. Your denial will not change what I feel to be true—Lucian. Please—believe in my words.”

I drew in a breath—to ease the burning pain in my chest—wanting desperately to believe—to love another.  Part of me hoping Kara’s certainty only a myth—knowing my existence would end if this mysterious being—was taken from me…
