New Orleans~ 1875

Once darkness covered the earth, I sensed his presence. A year passed… yet what I had done still pained my soul. I turned into mist and willed myself to the main level. Tristen stood on the terrace, emotionless—his eyes no longer filled with sorrow. They were empty— if Kara robbed my vampire friend of the past. In a single thought I reached out to my creator…

With deep regret she whispered, “He left me no choice Lucian but to cast a spell to ease his suffering. The spell will not last for eternity. In time Tristen will remember the woman he loved as no-other. For now—at least Tristen will exist as he should. Not punishing himself for something neither of you could control. For fate chooses our destiny…  ”

Silently I cursed… masking my inner-thoughts, I said hello and invited Tristen into my home. He took a seat in the library and I offered him a glass of red wine. Sensing the vampire recently fed. He nodded thank you, then stared into the night. Unable to read his thoughts I began a conversation. Wanting—needing to know a part of him was still human.

In a monotone voice he said, “I need your assistance Lucian. For months I’ve sensed a change in me. As if someone-something has wiped away pieces of my memory. As if a part of my inner-self is missing. Yet I know you and I have been friends for centuries. We have fought side-by-side in battle to protect the innocent.”

Deep mourning washed through me… as my mind filled with turmoil. For I could not tell Tristen his emptiness was caused by the loss of his wife. For my vampire friend left Kara no other option—except wipe away Maggie’s memory from his thoughts.  So—once again I betrayed my friend… speaking an untruth. Telling Tristen of his long-ago life. Leaving out the time he spent in Italy… meeting the woman who stole his heart with a single breath. Knowing one day… I would surely burn in hell for my deceit…
